Cleansing The Wastes

Account of Canoness Ness Cannon of the Order of the Bloody Rose
14.009 post
Vigilus

Our deployment began as a standard response to a call for help - a Xenos presence was detected near a scouting camp and we were sent to cleanse all life from the region. We had disposed of a few encampments of miners that had come in contact with Xenos life, and were doing a final sweep of the area when we received word of a group of suspected heretics, in the guise of Space Marines. Initially I had my reservations about attacking a contingent of marines, even under suspicion of heresy, but The Emperor cleared my mind and showed me the way when he sent Saint Celestine with a squadron of seraphim to guide us in his stead.

It didn't take long before we encountered what appeared to be some sort of infestation covered ruins, beyond which came the sound of engines.

Using the diseased terrain as cover, we were set upon by the pretenders - all pretenses were dropped and they attempted no parley. We rapidly fell into a defensive position, with our tanks fanning out to protect Celestine and my fellow canonesses, while I was set to direct our Retributor sisters covering our right flank.

A squadron of the cowards ran forth towards the center of our column cowering behind several assuredly stolen storm shields, while a squadron of their compatriots attempted to flee from us by way of motorbikes. A hail of shots rained down upon our transports, and though our faith held our Exorcist, unreliable on the best of days, was left barely functional.

The would-be deserters on bike noticed our attention on them and realizing they had no hope of escape they turned and fired the weapons of our fallen brothers on us!

One of the Retributors under my charge was thought lost to the opening volley of fire, but Emperor bless, her wounds miraculously closed and her eyes glowed with righteous fury as she aimed her multi-melta at her would-be murderers. Truly my sisters were blessed by His guidance as they let loose with fiery vengeance, slamming waves of heat upon a stolen land-speeder.

A sudden rumbling shook my concentration, however, and I turned to find the machines-haunted Exorcist rumbling across the battlefield. Behind it I could just make out the last figures of a squad of Repentia running forth from our Transport towards the pretenders cowering behind shields, while a flights of seraphim soared overhead in all directions save back. The sound of shredding metal as our enemy was ripped apart by our Emperor blessed sisters, wielding the instruments their own penance, brought a warmth to my heart I hadn't felt in quite some time.

My reprieve was short lived, however, as the nearby land-speeders turned their attention fully to my sisters and I, and we were forced to weather the storm of their bullets with naught but our faith to protect us. Truly, the mad-men were even so desperate as to attempt to ram into us with their vehicles, crushing one of my charges and fleeing before we had any chance to avenge her.

Off in the distance I heard the engines of the motorcycles screech to a halt as they joined hand-to-hand combat with my sisters off in the distance. Were it not for their earlier cowardice and obvious desperation  I would have thought it an act of bravery on their part, rather than the ignorance it clearly was.

I know my sisters well, and no matter how great the equipment these children were attempting to abscond with they stood no chance against us in hand-to-hand combat. The singing of my Sister's Eviscerator, sounding above all else in the distance, told me I was right in this estimation.

It wasn't much longer before my squad and I had pushed through the enemy flanking maneuver and were moving to support our center as they pushed into enemy territory, though the enemy land-speeders had managed to escape us with minimal damage. It was clear the center had fallen to the Repentia, and I watched in the distance as a squad of seraphim descended behind the enemy lines in a glorious gout of flame and bullets. Our left flank, unfortunately, was met with a sudden incursion of heretic terminators, striking behind our lines and slaying several young members of our order without mercy.

With a sudden burst of flame and music, our Exorcist launched an unexpected volley of missiles towards the fleeing speeders, blowing apart one of the heretics before he even had a chance to wet himself like the imbecile child he was. I watched in awe as Celestine charged forth at the head of our Repentia sisters, and together with their Mistress the enemy fell in droves until Celestine and the Seraphim who struck at the enemy from behind met over the pile of dead.

Not Dead Yet vs Long Dead Asthmatics

Got a nice practice game into Gaspy3 with tons of slayers against a player who recently picked up the list. I'd seen it run before, and have been aware of it for awhile, but this was my first game into it. It is... an experience. My opponent going first meant he had to hold back to avoid getting into my charge ranges (edit: I put "with his heavies" here, I think it was just his lights) - between Mobility and the +2" deployment from the theme there is some crazy board presence here. I'll go into the round-by-round, but first, the lists!

Not Dead Yet and the Desert Hobo, Buffalo Team Tournament

So this weekend I wound up hitting the 2nd Annual Buffalo Team Tournament in Buffalo, NY, with 2 of my teammates from the OTC. After the OTC I had started trying out Jalaam, but only managed to get 2-3 games in before I went to London on vacation. Jump forward a few weeks, and I landed back in NY on the 22nd of March, with the tournament looming on the 24th. I'd been planning on pairing Jalaam with Zaal1, because I have a problem with trying to play ADR and also wanted to get some practice in before the SOO (woo Champions!). I knew that I wanted to run Jalaam in Winds, hopefully with something that could function as a counter-shooting list, and since that seemed like it'd make for a decently balanced list (volume of shooting, a few sources of mild-crack), I wanted to pair it with something that could ask it a lot of aggravating questions in its own right. I know Zaadesh2 has been the popular go to for our ADR, but I've always had a soft spot for Zaal1 and couldn't resist trying him out.

Unfortunately, I hadn't played him in over a year - so never in a theme. I did manage to get one game in via Vassal (Thanks to The Unholy Potato in WMH Discord for the game!), and while I got myself killed it made me feel pretty good about my decisions. I'll be going over my games from Saturday, but first... the lists!

A String of Games all involving theme lists - Tournament Report

Alrighty, yet more of the Fat Man shooting things. Feeling like I've lost the drive to be creative in any way, what with the impending theme dump, I haven't even bothered to change what I have in my bag for the last few weeks. Does seem to be working out for me, though. Having trouble imagining what will come out of the theme dump that will change that half of my pairing, but if something is there then we're going to be in a real good place.

This tournament was down in Waverly, NY - just on the border with Pennsylvania. There was quite the showing, with people from Syracuse, Binghamton, and Ithaca (where I'm from) traveling down to meet up with the guys that play out of Waverly.

For those who have been holding onto hope that themes aren't the end all be all, every one of my game was into a theme list...

Editing note:
Okay. So. Yes, the original title referenced 1- playing into many tier lists, 2- my blogs current title, and 3- a tragic part of history. It has been changed, because holy shit internet, it is totally fine that some people were bothered. And, hey people who were bothered, sorry 'bout that.

Longest Day - Tournament in Bethlehem, PA

Alrighty, I have a few write ups to do, and this is me starting out with the oldest one I can still remember well enough to do this with. This tournament was a 75pt standard SR down in Bethlehem, PA, about 3 hours and 15 minutes from where I live. Ever since I gave up smoking, doing these early tournaments that require a long haul has been kind of brutal on me, and I've generally done pretty frickin' bad. Right now I'm planning on chugging a bunch of energy drinks when I get there, hoping that will simulate being on my previous cocktail of stimulants. As is, though, I got my bags packed the night before, loaded my car, and went to bed early on a Friday night after having a relaxing time hanging out with my cats and watching TV.

I just dropped Rasheth the entire day, as my off-list was more for infantry spam and/or Cryx in general. So... the list!

GenCon - Batreps and Afterthoughts on Skorne

Prologue~

In the beginning...
I kinda thought I wouldn't do so great at GenCon. I went into it hoping to dick around with new themes, however, and brought a bunch of models that I didn't end up using. Yes - the Skorne book release was disappointing. I did, however, write my lists at 8:30 am for the first tournament, which started at 9am. This may have been a mistake, but my initial poor showing was definitely not a list issue.

Note: I will be doing battle breakdowns, but I'm going to keep them short. I played 15 or so games, and while I don't have pictures for all of them even the ones I do make this a bit of a slog. I'll go into  afterthoughts on where we stand currently afterwards.

Champions Tournament, Morghoul3, GenCon Prep

My last post mentioned a list of tournaments I had coming up, and the first of those came to pass this Saturday. It was a ton of fun with a lot of great people, and the TO from Rochester, NY came down to run it to make sure I could play - so Thanks a ton to Gail for all of her help (those on the West Coast might know her from her role as TO at KingdomCon).

I brought Morghoul3, and of course Xekaar, as my pairing. I haven't gotten much practice in with M3, since he's a bit infuriating to play into unless you're ready for it, and as such I wanted to get as much practice in with him as possible....

So, the list!

Back from a hiatus, still kinda hate Xekaar

So, you've probably had no idea that I hadn't been updating. Seriously, who checks this with any regularity? But hey, I haven't! So today I've got some updates, and a little batrep where, spoilers, Xekaar dies.

Turns out I got married, and what with the wedding and some followup events I've been kinda swamped. To make up for it, though, and start my marriage off on a rocky footing I have one hell of a WM/H month planned coming up....

I Hate Myself: My Month of Xekaar - Final

Well, it is finally over - my month of Xekaar has come to an end. I'm not entirely sure of the total number of games played, I lost count around 18, and I'm sad to say I didn't manage to take pictures or do write ups for most of them. Herein I'll be discussing my afterthoughts given my poor showing at the WMW qualifier in Rochester; I went 2-2, though I don't think I can pin any of that on Xekaar, and one of them I feel like Xekaar would've pulled through if I had dropped him. But first, a quick rundown of my games...

Scrambling to Make this Work- I Hate you Guys: My Month of Xekaar, Part 4

Right now I have less than a week before the Rochester WMW qualifier. Last year, despite the state of Skorne, I pulled off 3-1. I had been hopeful that I'd make it to the second day this year, but I'm doing this Xekaar thing, so we'll see where this goes...

From time to time, the people at my FLGS run scramble tournaments, 2 or 3 round tournaments that aren't scheduled, $5 buy in, winner take all. Some weeks we'll do one Monday and another Saturday, depending on attendance and other things going on, and we go back and forth between WM/H and Guild Ball. Last Monday (the 12th), I brought some Xekaar into a 2 rounder at the LGS. Round 1 I played into an opponent who was, for the first time ever, playing Cygnar - dicking around with Kraye and Trencher theme. Round 2 I played into Gaspy3 in the Bane theme.

Sensible Lists played Senselessly - I Hate You Guys: My Month of Xekaar, Part 3

Got another 2 games in at the FLGS last week on Monday night (the 5th). I have another 3 in the pipe to write up, but figured I'd get these done first. These are the first 2 games I ran after spamming Archidons for the sake of spamming Archidons, and while the lists are a little more sensible, I did pretty poorly if I do say so myself.

3 Games, 4 Archidons, 0 Wins - I Hate You Guys: My Month of Xekaar, Part 2

So I recently picked up 3 archidons, bringing my total of them to 4. I had a few plans, mainly because I had only started running Naaresh near the end of Mk 2 and Archidon Spam - a mostly terrible idea that seemed to gain a lot of traction post-errata - actually seemed fun with him. P+S 20 defense 14 armor 19 beasts that threaten 13"? Yes Please!

Instead, I fielded them with Xekaar.

Skornifest Destiny: Skorned Earth

Errata, Tournaments, Cons, Conclusions

So, I managed to get a few games in before my first post-errata tournament rather quickly. My first go-to was trying Makeda2 with double swordsmen and anti-ranged delivery equipment (krea, shaman). I played a few games with it, enjoyed the crap out of it, then dropped it. Played a few games with Hexy2, enjoyed gutting my opponents' support and backlines with Ashes, then dropped him.

Then it was time for the first tournament I'd be attending...

Filthy Casual: Tournament Report

I went to a nearby town for a laid back 1 list steam roller event. Wound up being a 10 man 3 round event, and I had a ton of fun. We're working on bringing the 2 meta's into closer contact, since we're only ~45 minutes apart, and this weekend had 5 people (myself included) make the trip down, and we've had a few of them come up for tournaments as well. I really like the feeling of community this game has to it, and look forward to making more trips to see the guys down there.

Rasheth Wants to Pet the Kitty

So I've been thinking about Rasheth with Ferox a lot lately, because of course I have. I decided to try it with the models I have, though I've impulse bought a second unit... Played into Menoth, one of the jacks below is being proxied, but I'll be damned if I can remember which one is which. The one with the gun isn't the AOE gun, but the single target gun. He's on the right in the pictures...

The List:

Skorne Army - 74 / 75 points

(Rasheth 1) Dominar Rasheth [+28]
 - Titan Gladiator [14]
 - Despoiler [18]
Praetorian Ferox (max) [21]
Paingiver Beast Handlers (min) [5]
Tyrant Rhadeim [9]
Mortitheurge Willbreaker [4]
Paingiver Bloodrunner Master Tormentor [4]
Paingiver Bloodrunner Master Tormentor [4]
Void Spirit [4]
Void Spirit [4]
Paingiver Bloodrunners [9]
Tyrant Commander & Standard Bearer [6]

I went a bit heavy on solos, for scenario play and arcing targets. This did pay off, in the end, helping me secure a scenario win and take out a few key targets. The idea is to bully as much as possible pre-feat, then go in for a massive attrition swing and jam to close out via scenario.

I don't really know Menoth, so I can't guess at what my opponents list was. Plenty of jacks, plenty of sprays, Eiryss, character unit, choir, double wracks.

Trial by Fire and Making the Cut For GenCon

GenCon:
I'm heading out to GenCon tomorrow, and have been trying to lock in a few caster pairings for it. Right now I'm most comfortable and experienced with pXerxis and Mordikaar, but I wanted more variety in case my pairing flops. I've gotten a few more games in with Mordikaar, and he's definitely going to be my drop into Ret, maybe Cygnar, as very few points worth of his army can wipe out significant chunks of theirs, and my lists with him should be stealth and def 17 on the approach. He might also have to go into Khador if I see Irusk on the other side, but I don't really see him as a Skorne drop, both of my lists should have enough beef that I don't have to be afraid of his infantry. pXerxis seems to be able to handle heavy beast and jack lists, with quite a bit of survivability.

Things I'm worried about:

High value shooting - Beasts and jacks capable of lobbing multiple boosted ranged attacks. Xerxis wants to deliver his Ferox for a crippling alpha, and while my threat ranges are insane I'm worried about dropping into Legion where I might lose 2-3 Ferox on the approach. Really takes the wind out of my alpha strike. Some Cygnar lists can also do this, though they don't scare me quite as much after facing down an eCaine jack heavy list at the WMW qualifier.

Undead Infantry (or Construct infantry) - Really makes Voids and Blood Runners lose a lot of value. Essence blast is still good at clearing them, but I'm not sure I want to drop Mordikaar into Cryx if I see a bunch of banes in one list.

Solutions - Nihilators still hit hard enough and accurate enough to mulch banes. Tibbers can rip through huge swathes of them as well, but my pXerxis list lacks a gladiator. A few cannoneers can shore this up, and still threaten heavies and assassination, making it harder for my opponent to shoot me up.

I've been toying with eXerxis, as I switched to him for my JML at week 4, and decided to see how much shooting he can handle. So far I've dropped him into Cryx, Trolls (twice), Circle, and last night I asked a friend of mine to drop his best Ossyan list ideas into me. I will say that he is in no way a drop into a shooting army, but for combined arms or melee I think he is ideal. The idea is long threatening reach heavies that, on feat, can either crack arm or take out large swaths of infantry and help me get board control.

Mordikaar Vs. Dr. Arkadius: Academic Throw Down

 Battle Report!

Mordikaar Vs Dr. Arkadius:
So initially my Mordikaar list was a bit different, including a cannoneer instead of the legends, Orin, and the second void spirit. Today I saw a list online that used the Legends, though, and figured I'd try them out. Sadly, this meant my plan of running five heavies with Mordikaar would have to be tabled.

NOTE:
For today's game the role of Despoiler will be played by Bluebug. I have had some weird issues with my Despoiler model in the past, with him having spent about 8 months without a base, and now that I finally put him back on one I don't quite know where he went...
